Label information Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Emil Carlsen immigrated to the United States as a young man. He was initially trained as an architect, but he soon turned to painting. Study in Europe introduced Carlsen to the work of the 18th-century French still life painter Jean Baptiste Siméon Chardin, whose work had a profound influence on him. In the still life on display here, the brass bucket, blue vase and onions shine with light. A window is reflected in the bottle. The objects merge into a dark background, creating an emphasis on subtle light and form.
