Label information A native of Louisiana, Ida Kohlmeyer received BA and MFA degrees from Newcomb College and subsequently studied briefly with Hans Hofmann. Both Hofmann and artist Mark Rothko had a profound influence on her early work, and can be seen especially in such early work as Passage #2. This painting reflects all three artists' belief that a work of art speaks more directly to the spectator when it is free from the distraction of subject matter. Color relationships, balance, and expressive brushwork are of primary importance in this type of painting.
